Medical Billing and Coding

PSB’s Billing and Coding program provides a comprehensive education that includes classroom lecture, hands-on experience, a strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, coding, and billing.  Therefore, our graduates are well-prepared to enter the field because they understand the medical conditions that each code represents.

Professionals that graduate from our program are prepared for certification and can work in places such as hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, clinics, and insurance companies.

Program Details:

FULL-TIME DAY: 90 Weeks/6 Semesters
FULL-TIME EVE: 120 Weeks/8 Semesters
TOTAL CREDITS/HOURS: 95/1800

Program Objective:

Enrollment in this program provides the student with a thorough working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities in working within a medical office. This would include record keeping, medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, human diseases and their treatments, ICD-9-CM and CPT Coding procedures, data entry skills, different kinds of insurance and regulations, and insurance software applications. The courses will prepare the student to sit for the certification exam in billing and coding, insurance and reimbursement, and/or medical administration.

The objective is to provide students with basic education to secure responsible entry-level positions in the medical administration field, working as a Medical Administrative Assistant, Medical Receptionist, Medical Billing Clerk, or Medical Records Coder, or a Medical Insurance Coder among other positions.

Career Skills:

 
A Medical Administrative Assistant is responsible for answering telephones, scheduling patients, patient chart preparation, filing and billing. Handles completion of medical insurance forms, types correspondence and reports using personal computer. This requires detailed knowledge of computers and their related software packages: Microsoft Office 2003.
Medical Billing Clerk serves medical insurance customers by determining insurance coverage; examining and resolving medical claims; documenting actions; maintaining quality customer services and billing accordingly. Documents medical claims actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records. Maintains quality customer services by following proper customer service practices and responding to customer inquiries. Prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information. This requires detailed knowledge of computers and their related software packages and strong organization skills.

A Medical Records Coder is able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of coding guidelines and practices to include accurate assignment of ICD-9-CM and CPT codes, appropriate DRG assignment, as well as the ability to effectively communicate with medical staff and ancillary departments regarding coding issues.
