Program Objectives:
Enrollment in this program provides the student with a thorough working knowledge of the roles and responsibilities in working within a medical environment as a medical assistant.
The educated Medical Assistant (MA) will be able to function as both administrative and/or clinical assistant. The student will be taught the legal and ethical considerations for the MA, as well as the OSHA guidelines for both settings.
Career Skills:
As an administrative assistant, the MA will be taught to maintain patient medical records, complete medical insurance forms, answer correspondence, properly process mail, schedule appointments, use proper telephone techniques, greet and interview patients, transcribe and maintain medical records, and process office accounts. The MA will be taught manual pegboard accounting and computerized accounting and scheduling.
As a clinical assistant, the MA will be taught how to take height, weight, temperature, pulse, and blood pressure; assist the patient in positioning and draping for physical exams; use sterilization techniques for assisting with minor surgery; draw blood; give shots; and place leads for an ECGs. The MA will also be taught microscopic urinalysis, hemoglobin and hematocrit testing, preparing blood smears, pregnancy testing, blood typing, throat cultures, and other routine tests performed in the physician's office.
The internship will give the student a chance to put into practice what he/she has learned in the classroom and clinical laboratory.
One of the goals of the program is to teach the students the subjects necessary for the preparation of the Certified Medical Assistant examination.
Graduates of this program will be have the basic education required to secure entry-level positions for such jobs as Medical Assistant - Back Office, Medical Administrative Assistant - Front Office, Medical Receptionist, Medical Billing Clerk, Medical Coding Clerk, Medical Records Clerk, or Medical Secretary.

| A Medical Administrative Assistant - Front Office/Medical Secretary is responsible for answering telephones, scheduling patients, patient chart preparation, filing and billing. Handles completion of medical insurance forms, types correspondence and reports using personal computer. This requires knowledge keyboarding skills and a medical software package. |
| A Medical Administrative Assistant - Back Office is responsible for escorting the patient to the exam room, taking vitals, positioning and draping the patient, drawing blood, giving shots, assisting the physician with minor surgery, and/or place leads for an ECG. |
Medical Billing Clerk serves medical insurance customers by determining insurance coverage; examining and resolving medical claims; documenting actions; maintaining quality customer services and billing accordingly. Documents medical claims actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records. Maintains quality customer services by following proper customer service practices and responding to customer inquiries. Prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information. |
A Medical Records Coder is able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of coding guidelines and practices to include accurate assignment of ICD-9-CM and CPT codes, appropriate DRG assignment, as well as the ability to effectively communicate with medical staff and ancillary departments regarding coding issues.

A Receptionist is responsible for greeting patients, scheduling the next appointment, answering phones, and doing any paperwork associated with the position. |
